Campanologist broke through for a deserving first Group One victory with a convincing win in the Deutschland Preis - Grosser Hansa Preis in Hamburg, Germany on July 17. A dual Group Two winner and placed at this level in Italy on his previous start, Campanologist made no mistake this time and was always to the fore under Frankie Dettori in the six runner field following a good start. Progressing round the home turn, he hit the front inside the two furlong marker and looked set for a comfortable success until a late challenge emerged from Weiner Walzer. However, Campanologist was not going to be denied and responded well to win by three quarters of a length in a time of 2m.33.04s.
Campanologist returned to Germany the following month for the Group One Rheinland-Pokal on August 15 and ran out the convincing winner despite the rain-softened ground. Local rider Adrie de Vries deputized for Frankie Dettori who did not make it to the course in time and proved an able substitute. With only five runners contesting the 12 furlong event, de Vries settled Campanologist at the rear of the field where he bided his time until improving his position to lead with two furlongs to run. Though challenged by race favourite Zazou, Campanologist soon put the issue beyond doubt and pulled clear in the closing stages for a comfortable victory.
