The Godolphin Arabian came from the desert to become one of the three founding stallions of the modern thoroughbred. He was a superbly handsome 18th century Arab horse who was an outstanding success at stud in England, with leading sire titles in 1738, 1745 and 1747. His influence was immense, and all the first 76 British Classic winners had at least one strain of him in their pedigree. The Maktoum family’s private horseracing stable was named in honour of the Godolphin Arabian.
Horses have existed in the Arab region as long as recorded human life - a history much longer than that of either Europe or the Americas. They were valued highly as a farm animal and a military animal in both the Egyptian and the Persian empires of old.
